The Story
A visionary architect’s radical approach to sustainable design collides with devastating reality when wildfire consumes the historic town of Lahaina.
Shaped by early experiences in Alaska’s pristine wilderness and a lifelong fascination with harnessing natural energy, David’s off-grid philosophy was once dismissed as idealistic and impractical. But when disaster strikes paradise, his moment arrives unexpectedly—transforming personal conviction into community salvation.
This intimate documentary captures a pivotal moment when environmental idealism becomes urgent necessity. As Hawaii faces its climate reckoning, one man’s journey from outsider to essential community builder reveals a powerful truth: what we once considered optional luxury may be our only path forward.
“Once for the few, now for all.”
We have drawn a hard line in the sand. We do not want to work on projects that do not have an internal compass aimed at doing good in the world, whether that means for humanity or the environment.
The production was originally slated to be completed on August 9th, 2025 with one final interview. Working on a different production in Lahaina on the morning of the 8th, I just got out in time before the fire resparked and without hesitation, we cancelled the next day’s interview. The weight of tragedy surrounding the Lahaina and Kula fires stalled the project for a whole year until we found the inspiration to reengage and find a way forward. The plot had changed. This became the story.
